Representatives of governments, international organisations and the private sector have made global commitments to combat malnutrition
127 delegations from governments, international organisations, philanthropic institutions and the private sector met in Paris during the Nutrition for Growth Summit (N4G) in order to place nutrition at the heart of the sustainable development agenda. FIAP and AECID have been present representing Spanish Cooperation and collaborating in the moderation of two panels on gender.
Key commitments have been made to combat malnutrition globally. Malnutrition has a major impact, especially on young children and pregnant and lactating women, slowing down economic development and perpetuating the cycle of poverty. In this context, the need for a global, coordinated and multilateral response, with the participation of governments, international organisations and the private sector, was underlined.
Furthermore, the importance of innovative, effective and sustainable investments that go beyond immediate assistance, with a focus on achieving long-term impact, has been highlighted. Emphasis was placed on issues such as the integration of nutrition with health systems, immunisation and the impact of climate change on food security. The urgent need to close the financing gap and ensure transparency and accountability of investments in this area has also been addressed.
In spaces for dialogue with civil society, initiatives focused on community participation, youth leadership and gender equality in access to nutrition have been promoted. In addition, strategies for the prevention and treatment of malnutrition have been shared, including food fortification, local solutions and the use of artificial intelligence in public health.
One of the major milestones of the summit was the registration of more than 400 commitments, both financial and policy, to be implemented over the next four years. FIAP has provided technical assistance to more than 30 countries for the formulation of these commitments.
Finally, financial agreements have been announced. The international community has committed to mobilise around 28 billion dollars for the fight against malnutrition, of which 6.5 billion will be provided by the European Union and 400 million by the Spanish Cooperation. For its part, EU4SUN has reaffirmed its commitment to continue supporting the SUN Movement and its member countries in the post-Paris process.
